Hoof Beats of Inspiration

Hope in a Horse
Hope in a Horse

How does God inspire you? Through music or a daily message? Through humans or animals? I’m inspired by my American Paint Horse, Buck Superwind. I love all things horse. Bucks is the inspiration for the stallion, Sampson, in my Heart Trilogy. When I have a hurried day, when nothing seems to be going my way, I saddle up and head out into the woods that parallel my home in Northeast Washington.

Three gates close behind me and I enter freedom. Freedom from worry, the rush of marketing my young adult books, deadlines, writing, free from work at our local k-12 school’s afterschool program in which I coordinate. I lope along and all the sudden my mind is free and clear, and I’m ready to allow God’s inspiration to fill me up and calm my spirit.

I hear Him whisper to me. Gently guiding my path, encouraging my spirit. I listen. He talks. We commune. I smile, sometimes allowing a giggle to slip between my lips. But always happy. Ready to step into the next piece of my life. Calm. Clear. Content.

I feel the rock of his hoof beats and let the day’s business drift away and settle in among the trees. I allow myself to release all anxiety, worry, and stress. I let the breeze float through my hair and brush past my face with its tender fingers.

There is nothing more stimulating than the smell of horse hair and the feel of a soft winter coat. Sometimes, I just rest my head against Buck’s neck and take in a deep breath. Suddenly, life appears livable. Easy. Acceptable.

Just remember this…Jesus will be riding his white stallion someday soon.

What inspires you? Lift your spirits? Fills you up? Cling to it. Sing along. Let it curl up on your lap and wrap you in a blanket of peace. Take hold of it. Smell it. Dig into it, get your hands dirty. And most importantly, let God speak to you through it as it is His gift. Embrace it.

I would love to hear what inspires you and why…

Not all at once, mind you. 😉

And these days, I feel as if a nap would be the best inspiration.

Great inspirations Darlene, but I bet you could do them all at once. 🙂 And as for the nap, take one. Good for the spirit.
