Anyone Looking for Homeschool or Summer Fun Books and Curriculum?

What else does one do when finished writing teen books?

Create an exciting curriculum for the stories, of course!

I have never been more impressed with the homeschool community than I am now.

Over the winter, I created one literary guide, two workbooks, and re-vamped one guide on how youth can write fiction. What a stretch and what a thrill!

A friend and homeschool mom, Carol Hookham, was generous enough to loan me four of her workbooks to use as guides. We also brainstormed over tea and on the phone of what gems should be included in the workbooks.

“One thing I wished I had when all of my kids were at home was one workbook with something for each of my children,” Carol said.

I began with my True to Heart Trilogy, which is a re-write of a trilogy that went out of print. After gaining my rights back, I was able to re-write them, adding characters and plot twists, and go on to re-publish them. Currently, two of the books are written and the third will be out this fall.

So what is special about these books and why should you give them a chance?

The True to Heart Trilogy is about an Arrow Lakes Indian girl coming of age in the mid-1800s, fighting for her dreams of horse racing and breeding to eventually sell her stock to the Hudson’s Bay Company Fort Colvile, dodging her father’s schemes to keep her in a traditional woman’s role, and trying to stop her younger brother from following her path of horse racing.

One would think I would title the workbook after the trilogy, but I didn’t.

Spupaleena

Instead, this workbook is named after my main character, Spupaleena, and my husband’s people: Arrow Lakes or Sinyekst, modernly spelled Sinixt, which is translated as Bull Trout or Speckled Fish. Thus the title of my workbook is the Speckled Fish People Workbook: True to Heart Trilogy.

This workbook contains book chapter lessons, which is to be expected, but also offers lessons rich in history, geography, hands-on fun, and Native American Legends. Don’t worry, all lessons come with answer keys.

Coyote Kills Wind

By Mourning Dove, Okanogan

Coyote (snk’a? líp) grew tired of his own country. One day he told his wife, Mole (p lpa’lyaxal’qs) that he wished to travel. He took her and the children to the lodge of his friend, Badger, and asked him to care for the children. He said to Badger, “I am going away to hunt the enemy, going where there is great danger.”

Coyote gave Badger a small sack to hang on his tepee pole. He said to Badger, “Should this pack fall from the pole, you will know by that sign that I am killed. But if it does not drop down, then you will know that I am alive.”
