Rooted in the Canadian West

Welcome to Women Honoring the West.
Women Writing the West is where I first met Ann Edall-Robson, a talented writer and a valued member of the group. Her first conference, when I was President, took place in the quaint and historic town of Walla Walla, Washington. Imagine her excitement. All that way from Canada, a trip filled with anticipation and the promise of new experiences. What a treat!
Let’s hear from Ann.

I was raised in the Cariboo country of British Columbia. Surrounded by horses, ranching, rodeo, lakes, and trees. Did I grow up on a ranch? The short answer is no.
We lived out of town and always had horses and dogs. I belonged to the high school rodeo team and enjoyed hunting
game birds in the fall. Family and friends made it very easy for me to spend time helping with branding cattle, haying, and sinking deeper into a lifestyle I didn’t know I loved until it was no longer part of my life. The lifestyle I once took for granted, has brought me full circle to a place where I can voice the passion to keep my heritage alive through writing and the photographs I take.
Being attracted to the Western lifestyle is easy for me. It’s where my roots are. It’s who I have always been. How I was raised—morals, respect, honesty, integrity. People who help each other. Look me in the eye when you speak. Your word is a firm handshake.
I am comfortable driving down a gravel road and walking through a barnyard. Probably more than living in town. There is nothing like gravel travel over washboard roads. It takes me to my comfort zone, to that place that grounds me.
The inspiration for all of my creative endeavours is simple—where I am from, and how I was raised, guides me on the journey to where I need to go. Sharing moments others may never get to experience through my writing andphotography. Expressions of my passion for keeping traditions from being lost.
Choosing a favourite character line from the books I have written would come from Pete Noll in
my recently released book, Bloodlines. “Patience, girl, patience. All in good time.” I am not able to choose just one favourite ranch animal, because I am torn between a dog and a horse. They both have spunk and try. They will speak to you with their eyes and they capture your heart. They teach you respect, how to be humble, and the joy of love. You are their person as much as they are yours. Two fine beings that become confidants, know your mood, and set you straight when you’re in a funk. A person can not ask for better friends.
I am not a planner when it comes to my writing projects. I have recently completed Bloodlines, the second book in the Brandi Westeron Mystery series. Hot on its tail is Baabs & Maax, the fifth book in the Barn Cat Buttons children’s series. Numbers thirteen and fourteen of my published books, respectively.
At the moment, the third and fourth Brandi Westeron books have some of my attention. These are mixed in with a 2025 Christmas book featuring all the Barn Cat Buttons gang of characters. I am also dabbling with an anthology, a collection of my own work. As I mentioned, I am not a planner, which I feel gives me license to have several more projects in the wings for me to work on when the urge takes me in their direction.
Bloodlines and Baabs & Maax are now available on Amazon Canada and US and on her Website.
